Get Active Randpark : It’s not only about golf at our “jewel” of a club

Talk about being happy and healthy, let us introduce you to Powerblast’s Warren McCann – if you don’t know this popular guy already – who runs the Health and Wellness gym which is based at the club. Warren in his day – and we’re talking 1988 to 1995 – was a Springbok sprinter. He ran the 100m in 10.1sec, the 200m in 20.3sec and the 400m in 45sec. Now that is super fast. He also played rugby for Transvaal and then the Lions as a wing, being in the Transvaal team that won the inaugural Super 10 competition with victory over the Auckland Blues in the final. He also played rugby league for South Africa’s Rhinos, touring overseas with them. This all-round exposure to top level international sport was the catalyst which led him to become the renowned sports conditioning specialist which he is today. He now trains anybody who wants training for any sporting code from beginners right up to Olympic level, and also has specific programmes for golfers – from newcomers in the game right up to pro level. Movement based exercises, strength exercises, nutrition, bootcamps and transformation challenges (a 3-month programme, for instance, to reach your goal whether it be losing 20kg or whatever) are all part of what Warren does, and he is to soon introduce yoga and pilates. Warren has two trainers working with him, Ellen Gouws and Theo Uys Henrich and also operates in close co-operation with physiotherapist Cheryl Stacey. Warren bubbles with enthusiasm: “I love what I do and I feel it’s my way of giving back to sport which in turn has given me so much in life.” Warren’s mobile number is 082 450 8220.

“Randpark,” Gill Warner enthuses, “is like a jewel in the middle of Joburg.” Now Gill is the lady who runs the Get Active Family Fitness classes Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6 and 7 o’clock at the club. The classes take place just outside the clubhouse next to the kiddies’ play area. “It’s so beautiful at that time of the day especially at this time of the year,” she says. “The sunsets are divine, there’s the bird life, security-wise it’s completely safe and we’re training in the great outdoors on this big, beautiful piece of property which is why I call it a jewel.” Gill, for the last 24 years, has been committed to getting people to live a healthy lifestyle. She is an independent Herbalife distributor but her Randpark classes are free. No charge, folks! “I just want to get the community active, to get Mom and Pop off the TV couch. That’s my motivation. And while they’re exercising, they can keep an eye on the kids playing right next door. The classes are for all ages, adults, kids, whoever. Fit and not so fit. Typically, we do some warm-up and core exercises and then some folk do one of the trail runs while others carry on with exercises. It’s all about getting into shape and as a result, well, feeling absolutely fabulous!” Contact her on 082 458 2045. What Gill does is just one of the growing number of activities at the club apart from golf, which is what this article is about.

For a change of pace try the Randpark Tennis Academy, run by Hanco Mostert, who offers expert coaching on two floodlit renovated and upgraded hard courts. Students are given comprehensive coaching in all aspects of the game, combining technical, tactical, physical and mental instruction. Whatever your ability, age or experience there is a program designed to help you advance to the next level. Hanco was the No 1 player at the Wanderers Club for 12 years and, coaching-wise, worked in close co-operation with Neville Godwin who in turn coached Kevin Anderson. So he knows his business. Hanco’s number is 072 758 2881 but the courts are available for anyone interested in social tennis. Contact reception to make a booking.

Finally, Randpark is blessed with a running track and runners and walkers, members and non-members, are welcome to use it before and after golf every day. The distance choices are 3km, 5km or 8km. Access from May to the end of August is before 7am and after 5pm, while from September to the end of April it is before 6.30am and after 17.45pm. It’s a beautiful walk (or run) in the park in superb surroundings which as, Gill Warner reminds us, is “a jewel in the middle of Joburg”.
