With stormy skies and halted play, Randpark Club hosted their annual Club Championships this past weekend. It was an exciting weekend wrestling with the weather, but the players were all in high spirits and ready to fight for that trophy.
Randpark Club had a record-breaking 340 players enter this year’s Club Championships, which contributed to the festive weekend it ended up being. With three divisions in the Men’s category and four in the Ladies category, there was a lot of play to be completed in somewhat challenging conditions. Due to the rain on Sunday afternoon they were unable to conclude play for the B and C Men’s Divisions.
“A thunderstorm delayed play from around 14:00 to just before 17:00. Which meant that more than 50% of the players would not have been able to complete their round. In the end, we believe that to reschedule the entire B & C Division Championships to be the fairest.” Says Randpark Club GM, Francois Swart.
The Ladies completed all four divisions, with none other than SA’s top-ranked Kajal Mistry taking first prize in the A Division. Mistry blew the competition away with an outstanding play on both days.
The Men’s A Division finished with an exciting two-hole playoff between the two leaders, Matthew Adams and Erwee Botha. The play-off was suspended after the first hole due to lightning danger, but then commenced around 17:00 on Sunday afternoon. With all eyes on these two players, Erwee Botha came out tops claiming the title of Randpark Club Champion 2018.
Francois said, “The finale was something to witness. An exciting finish, with everyone present watching the final putt on the 18th. Congratulations Erwee Botha!”
